about

French composer and producer Thomas Pujols, under his Nebulo moniker, has created a musical substance that isn’t clearly defined nor is it easily categorized. It’s often vague and runs counter to our experience with eclectic electronic transmissions, specifically those designed to illuminate and explore the ragged shadows of our own memories. Blending together a skewed pop persuasion with poly-rhythmic arrangements and vivid sound manipulation, Pujols fashions a space for a cautious noise to rise and fan out in all directions. Never one to shy away from both the light and dark natures of his music, he embraces the tacit emotionality that seems to run through each of his songs, imbuing each with a diverse and ubiquitous personality. There’s a certain freedom and spontaneity to his work as Nebulo that ably demonstrates why his electric warbles and melodies have such a dramatic effect on anyone within earshot.

Through the oscillating melodies and rhythms of his latest release, “Zellige,” Pujols lays out a basic framework wherein our anticipatory reactions to his work are constantly in motion. These tracks are often spiked with a harsh dissonance but are just as likely to impose a lively pop playfulness within their meter, we’re left with the idea that he is looking for a balance between these two musical extremes. By confronting our expectations with his own drastically different electronic revelations, Pujols is inspired to peer deeper into these chasms of artificial disparity. Veering between a calm expression of artful nuance and a loud, cathartic burst of emotion, he frays our nerves and jolts our synapses back to attention. There’s no chance to sit idly by while these sounds liquefy in your ears—“Zellige” is the sound of broken pop predictions and Pujols own wondrous reveling in an uncertain world.
