about

Musing on questions of infinity and boundedness, Cait Foran’s “Eternal Return” weaves its sonic web from a series of intriguing doublings. On a formal level, these six pieces meld the acoustic real and its synthetic double to the point where the two become indistinguishable. Trading off voice, synthesizer, and a variety of found/sampled accoutrements, Foran introduces motifs and phrases that later reappear in peculiar new ways; The simulacrum and the authentic intertwine in a wash of sound.

Foran’s scalar system for titling pieces, ranging from -2 to +3, introduces a further ambiguity at the level of concept: which instantiation of this motif, of that phrase, is the “original?” While the linear playback on audiocassette dictates a correspondingly linear progression, from Side A to Side B, from -2 to +3, its digital double offers the possibility to reconfigure track order, and thus also the moment at which each of these motifs originally occurs.

As Foran’s album title reminds us, however, these instances of doubling in “Eternal Return” are nothing more than infinitesimal data points in an infinite vastness of possibility. Just when we think we have disentangled the original from the copy, the real from its synthetic counterpart, we are confronted with an infinity of permutations occurring and recurring all around us. The tape clicks to a stop, respooled to start again from a new beginning.
